Diablo 1 Walkthrough -> The Butcher
If you speak to him, before he dies, he will tell you that a certain Archbishop Lazarus lured a group of townspeople into a trap and fed them to a demon named the Butcher. The townsman will ask you to avenge the murdered men so that their souls can enter heaven.
The Butcher’s Room, sought after, is located on the second level of the dungeons. It’s square, with a single door, filled with corpses. Open it and you’ll hear a painfully familiar, terrifyingly raspy “Ah-hhh, fresh meat!” The demon will rush at you, swinging an axe.
Completing this quest from scratch as a character is no easy task: The Butcher is incredibly powerful with his axe, chipping away at half your health at a time. As a warrior, you’ll need to swing your weapon quickly, drink healing potions, and pray you have enough healing bottles.
A rogue or sorcerer can lead the demon to a barred wall and attempt to slam the door in the monster’s face. The Butcher can be killed with magic or arrows through the bars, but he won’t harm you.
