The Refiner is an item that refines mud and sludge blocks into more valuable items, such as ore, coins, and gems. To refine blocks, the Refiner must be placed like regular furniture. The Refiner uses two blocks at a time, but single-unit blocks can also be refined. It can rarely be found in gold chests, and has a 5% chance in ice chests.
Since the Refiner produces ore randomly, it is possible to obtain ore that is not present in the current world. For example, if the world is generated with gold ore, the Refiner will occasionally produce platinum ore.
