Base Building and Killbox | RimWorld

Walls and Doors

Inside and outside of the base good solution, is to make a stone walls and doors. For outside perimeter also you bulding double walls and doors, because npc’s during raids always attack weakest poins of the base. So you provoke them, not to breaking things, but go to killbox, where single walls and no doors.

Not nice thing, making base inside mountains or caves, because sometimes bugs can spawn out of nowhere inside yours colony, and it will be destroyed.

Also outide walls and doors should be with no roof, for doing some agriculture, or collect electricity. Different types of rocks have a not similar amoun of hitpoints:

  • Steel wall – 300 hp
  • Granite wall – 510 hp
  • Granite – 900 hp
  • etc.

Killbox

Its simple and efective way to deal with mass raids, wild disasters, mechanoids and chasing animals. Also killboxes really helps, when you start solo on Naked Brutality difficulty. In fact basic killbox is long tunnel with multiple traps inside it. Later you can add turrets, labirint and fire for kebab a bunch of raiders, etc.

Sandbags and barricades fowking as cover for yours ranger colonists. So you send in front melle ones with sword and energy shield, and with ranger shoot with bow or rifle stunned raiders/animals/mechanoids. Also barricades are preventing some small animals going inside yours base.

Electricity

Power is important part for sustain and grow your colony. Nice way to set it up is always separating batteries in dedicated rooms, preventing the spread of fire in the event of a short circuit, and always route cables inside the stone walls for that reason.

Coolers, heaters, lamps, turrets and some crafting workbenches – all this consuming power.

Power construction:

Wood Generator – produces power by consuming wood. Must be periodically loaded with wood fuel by hand.

Max power output – 1000 W.

Materials: Steel x100, Components x2.

Requirements: Construct 4.

Chemical Generator – Produces power by consuming chemfuel. Must be periodically refueled by hand.

Max power output – 1000 W.

Materials: Steel x100, Components x3.

Requirements: Construct 6.

Wind Turbine – A wind-powered electrical generator. Requires a large clear space in front and behind for optimal air flow.

Max power output – 2300 W.

Materials: Steel x100, Components x2.

Requirements: Construct 4.

Solar Generator – Produces electricity from sunlight. Does not work in the dark or under artificial light.

Max power output – 1700 W.

Materials: Steel x100, Components x3.

Requirements: Construct 6.

Geothermal Generator

Max power output – 3600 W.

Materials: Steel x340, Components x8.

Requirements: Construct 8.

Battery – Stores electricity for later use. Charged batteries explode when exposed to rain or fire.

Max storage – 600 W.

Materials: Steel x70, Components x2.

Food

One of the important part of the base is ofcourse the ability to grow and store food. Except during winter, food can be grown almost anywhere in the colony. Winter cultivation, however, requires electricity—for lighting and heating—as well as an enclosed space with a roof. Therefore, it is a good idea to harvest the crops before winter sets in to ensure you have a stockpile.

You can also solve the food problem by hunting wild animals or raising livestock. Some animals can produce milk, chemical fuel, and other items. In the case of breeding animals, a special fenced paddock and grass or compound feed will be needed so that the animals can feed themselves.

It is important to know that frozen food does not spoil at all.

The simplest crops for cultivation

Rice – grows quickly and provides a steady, albeit small, supply of food; it is ideal for solo survival or for small groups of colonists.

  • Nutrition – 0.18
  • Growing time – 3 days
  • Fertility requirement – 70%
  • Fertility sensitivity – 100%
  • Light requirement 51%
  • Max growth temperature – 58.0C
  • Min growth temperature – 0.0C
  • Harvest yield – 6
  • Lifespan – 24 days

Potatoes – grow more slowly than rice but yield more food. They are a good choice for stockpiling for winter or sustaining a medium-sized colony of 5–10 people.

  • Nutrition – 0.10
  • Growing time – 5.8 days
  • Fertility requirement – 70%
  • Fertility sensitivity – 40%
  • Light requirement 51%
  • Max growth temperature – 58.0C
  • Min growth temperature – 0.0C
  • Harvest yield – 11
  • Lifespan – 46.4 days

Corn – grows even more slowly than potatoes but produces a much larger harvest. It is best grown once or twice per season, and only after you have already established a food buffer to guard against potential setbacks.

  • Nutrition – 0.40
  • Growing time – 11.3 days
  • Fertility requirement – 70%
  • Fertility sensitivity – 100%
  • Light requirement 51%
  • Max growth temperature – 58.0C
  • Min growth temperature – 0.0C
  • Harvest yield – 22
  • Lifespan – 90.4 days
