Flails and ranged weapons are effective against Skeletron. The key to defeating Skeletron is keeping your distance! If you have a sufficient supply of potions, the fight against Skeletron shouldn’t be difficult.
Once you defeat Skeletron, you can enter the Dungeon without hindrance.

Take everything you can from the Dungeon, as you’ll need these items to progress through the next areas. Among the books on the shelves, you’ll find the Water Shot spell. Break the books with your hammer, and sooner or later you’ll get it. There are also enough Crystal Hearts here to max out your character’s health (the cap is 400).
Monsters spawn very quickly in the Dungeon, making it difficult to progress deeper. Many parts of the Dungeon are riddled with damaging spikes.
