Player Companions (Part 3) | Fallout: New Vegas

Posted on August 6, 2026 by admin

Fallout: New Vegas Walkthrough -> Player Companions (Part 3)

Your companions will follow you wherever you go and automatically join battle at your side. However, for better control, you can issue them commands using the companion wheel. To open the companion wheel, approach your companion and press E. You can now issue them commands:

  • Aggressive/Passive Behavior – Switches the companion’s combat style. An aggressive companion will attack any enemy within range. A passive companion will wait for you to attack someone.
  • Use a Stimpack – This option takes a Stimpack from your inventory and heals your companion. The wheel displays your companion’s current and maximum health, as well as the number of Stimpacks in your inventory. Keep in mind that companions automatically use any healing items from their own inventory when their health gets too low.
  • Wait Here/Follow Me – Ask your companion to wait for you where you are or to continue with you. There are situations when it’s best to leave your partner at a distance.
  • Talk – Start a conversation with your partner. This can teach you new things about them, even unlocking new quests and abilities for you and your companion!
  • Back – order the companion to move back a little.
  • Stay Farther/Closer – Set how far away your companion will follow you.
  • Open Equipment – open a screen where you can exchange items with your companion. Don’t forget to give your companions new weapons and armor, as well as replenish their ammo and stimulants!
  • Ranged/Melee Attack – Command a companion to switch between attack types. Some companions are more effective at range, while others are more effective in close combat.
